A hotel manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of a hotel and its staff and has commercial accountability for planning, organising and directing all hotel services, including front-of-house (reception, concierge, reservations), food and beverage operations and housekeeping.

While taking a strategic overview and planning ahead to maximise profits, the manager must also pay attention to the details, setting the example for staff to deliver a standard of service and presentation that meets guests' needs and expectations. Business and people management are equally important elements.

Leadership[]

1. A successful hotel manager must have demonstrated leadership skills. Hotel managers are often in charge of leading hotel personnel and other managers of various departments. They may be obliged to organize schedules for teams and individuals, recruit, train and monitor new staff, promote and market the hotel and carry out inspections in order to comply with statutory regulations. They will set the sales and profit targets to be achieved.

Liaison[]

2. The hotel manager acts as a liaison between the hotel guests and the hotel staff. The manager may be called to resolve disputes and ensures that hotel and guest financial obligations are met. The manager may be called upon to organize accommodation, catering and other services provided by the hotel. In some instances the manager may even be more involved in the day to day running of a hotel, including taking on reception duties and serving meals as circumstances call for it.

Communication[]

3. Because of the leadership and liaison responsibilities, a hotel manager must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. The manager is essentially the "face" of the hotel, and must represent the hotel in a knowledgeable and eloquent manner. Whether or not the manager has more or less personal contact with the guests, they will spend time meeting with the heads of various departments within the hotel staff to coordinate and monitor the progress of business strategies.

Fiscal Responsibilities[]

4. Often, the hotel manager oversees the daily fiscal workings of the hotel. A good hotel manager must be comfortable working with numbers, managing various spreadsheets and budgets for different departments, and making important fiscal decisions, as well as keeping up to date and accurate statistical and financial records.

Additional Nexus Requirements[]

5. When the possibility exists that one's commute may spontaneously turn into a jellyfish, it's for the better if the manager lives on the premises. Alcoholism is common and understandable, as are occasional threats of suicide. The manager may be called upon to explain that while staff do their utmost to prevent nexus phenomena from damaging the hotel itself, they cannot be held accountable for any nexus-related trauma suffered by guests during their stay. A good manager will have existing back ups in case of staff affected by nexus-related trauma or temporary incidents.
