"But suppose I met someone who said he was from, say, 1954. He might even have used this place to obtain a suit in a style from 1954, though I'd hardly know the difference; but if he were really from 1943, and I told him anything about where I'm stationed or what we're doing, what then?" | |

The Wimseys are old, old money-- some of the oldest in Britain, in fact, and particularly fortunate in still having it. Unfortunately, they're also tabloid magnets, and not even in the usual sex-and-drugs way. Lady Winifred's father is the Duke of Denver, who was acquitted in 1925 of the murder of his sister's fiance; the aunt in question went on to marry a Chief Inspector; Winnie's other uncle is an irritatingly famous amateur detective, and married to a bestselling mystery writer who was also once acquitted of murder. Even her brother, Viscount St. George, married a woman with some intrigue in her past.
So most people have probably seen the Wimseys in the headlines at some point or another in the last twenty-five years, but they probably haven't seen Lady Winifred. Growing up, Winnie was always the Good Daughter, sweet and patient and well-behaved, a pretty good student at school but brought up to be a socialite who would eventually marry for status rather than love. And then, when she was twenty, a second World War broke out, and everything went to hell. St. George went joined the RAF to be a fighter pilot, and Winnie-- a little to her own surprise, and much to everyone else's-- went into the WRNS.
(She's not allowed to tell you what she does there, but it's pretty cool.)
